Generic Male Head

Check out the time-lapse:

Trying some new tools and techniques. Gota keep doing this every day! I can feel myself getting better and faster. I need to start memorizing anatomy more as well. I feel like having the bases of good anatomy will make things come out a lot better and a lot faster.

Winter Sculpting and Cool New Artist

Heres a link to my newest sculpt: http://vimeo.com/34342265

I also discovered an amazingly talented artist that has really inspired me to get better at the whole zbrush thing. Check him out: http://vimeo.com/pointpusher

I'm in need of starting more thesis stuff before break ends. I will be creating some rocks, first mocked up in maya for general shape an form, then switch over to zbrush for small details. Hopefully will be able to get those out and on this blog soonish.

Winter Break Work

Its winter break. Well almost halfway through it... I really want to get some sculpting done over these next few weeks and get some portfolio worthy stuff out of the learning experience. Tonight I did some free sculpting of a head:

Something else I was working on was a sea captain. However I haven't gotten around to making his hat or finishing the head, but perhaps I should still post it to get me more in the mood to finish it:

24 hour character design

Couple days ago I participated in a 24 hour Character Jam on facebook with some friends. 24 hours being the max anyone could work, but in realistic terms, work as fast as possible before you get behind in real work....

My prompt was a barber. I decided I would make a barber who's job was to cut the mane of a lion. Though I didn't get to complete my project because I had to work on other things... I did come up with a decent starting sculpt

All done in zbrush and some retopologizing and modeling in Maya:

Sadly I was one of the few to have a finished 3D model... I feel like just by watching people's WIP and seeing their final creation done I can learn a lot.

Retopology

Working on retopologizing a lot of my stuff in order to put them in portfolio. Its some tricky stuff, but kinda fun! Learning a lot in the process. I just have to find the time to do it with a lot of my models D:

Elephants Elephants, everywhere!

Still working on elephant stuff. They are a lot of fun to sculpt because they are so unique! Did this in late labs while taking a break from Thesis...

Making of:

Man Head 01

Going to perhaps start a trend of making heads... Though I do need to work on developing a final character for thesis, so that will probably be something I focus on. Though I can't show that off until its into production!!!

Elephant Head

I might go back and add texture to this... Right now its just the framework that could use a lot more detail, but I'm not sure my comp could handle whats needed to get the leathery skin down...

Head on over to my Vimeo to check out the making of, and other things I've been up to!

Giraffe Head

YAY!!!

Check out the making of on my vimeo

Goblin Head Sculpt

A quick sculpt tonight.

Check out the step by step of the sculpting process on my vimeo

Woman With Hair Sculpt

Hah just playing around with how hair might be sculpted in Zbrush... Need to actually study hair to understand it I think!

Dragon Head Sculpt

Some summer sculpting... Working a lot on getting texture into my models. Working on building up my modeling portfolio before school starts. Also getting a more firm footing when it comes to zbrush as a whole.

Refining some of my other sculpts, hoping to post some stuff later this week.

Zbrush 4

Just got my hands on zbrush 4. No more being out of date!!! Expect lots of videos on my vimeo in the next weeks as I play around with the new tools and get better at the program itself!

Key points to practice - Feet, Hands, Faces

Just the hard stuff!

Zbrush Video Tutorials

Go check out my video tutorials on Vimeo:

http://vimeo.com/haydenmcgowan

Hah not something I would normally do, but I got talked into it by friends. The videos are just a overlook at some basic things that a first time zbrusher would want to know to get a quick start into sculpting. I also will be creating videos of my own workflow and some of the tools I use to do my experimentation.

Retopology

Oh hey retopology.... Thats how you do it... Hah... About time I figured that out!

Sculpting Ideas

Working on two characters for next year. Just brainstorming some stuff. I work much faster in 3D than drawing ideas. Its so nice to just have the ability to sculpt and not have to worry about structure and stuff. Just pushing and pulling to get shapes, quickly blocking in cool ideas. Its really the best thing that I could wish for.

Still wondering if I should have the thinner man be older? Right now hes going to have like a cabby hat, though I had him with goggles on his hat before. Still not sure if I like either idea best. Got to explore explore explore!!!

Need to work on bodies now! Gota get to work on environment stuff as well. Its going to be tough making a huge environment which is what I'm imagining... Hmmmm...

Mudbox?

Whow more firsts!!! I have been playing around with mudbox and in some spare time created these few sculpts:

Bird man

Ninja turtle

Sea Horse / Dragon

Its loads of fun! I like it a little better in Zbrush in the way that u sculpt without seeing the polys, which really is very nice. Though everything else about the program seems to be very out dated and in no way as powerful as zbrush. But it was an interesting experience non-the-less

Hair? whaaaaa?

First time adding hair to a zbrush sculpt...Funkyyyyyy!
Got some more sculpts I gota finish up and post up here. They are missing eyes, due to my zbrush acting up and not letting me append stuff, though it worked last night oddly enough....

In other news... I'm working at the National Institute of Health. Its a fun internship where I get to learn a lot of different programs and get to touch base on a branch of 3D artwork I didn't really know existed. Only 2nd time in the D.C. area, so gona have to find all the cool hotspots!

Dragon Head

Felt like doing some more... Hah without needing to worry about school, I can just go nuts doing the fun stuff :)

Things on the list to learn include:

-How to retopologize for animation
-How to use normal maps
-And just general higher poly zbrush stuff (been staying decently low poly)

Summer Modeling

Well starting some Zbrush stuff for the summer.

May be a little busier than I first thought this summer, but still going to shoot to make 1 sculpt a day. Just trying to build up my skills with this program. Running on a older mac version, missing the 4.0 awesomeness. Gota do what I gota do!

Casino Props

As promised, some turn tables of the props...

Working hard on some digital paintings, can't really share now though. Gota keep it under wraps! You know how it goes.

Hope to get back into Z-brush next week, lets see how things go...

Casino Models

Working on Lip-sync Projects.

Here are some of the models for the Bookstore and Casino that they take place in. Turn-arounds to come....

Toy Project

Hasbro had a workshop here that I was selected to participate in. Here was the final product from that workshop.
I hope to get back to modeling once I get through some some of the work-crunch that is going on now. This summer I'll try to do a sculpt a day and keep it updated on this site.

Working On Story

Concept work for a possible thesis story. Story is about a Shaman who comes to a dieing girl and attempts to get her spirit back. However he finds that her spirit does not want to return to her sick and dieing body.

Caricature

Working on our caricatures. Just a sneak peek to keep me somewhat active on here... Still in process of texturing, not my fav part, but its fun to see happen.

Currently in the process of obtaining internships. Already got into a nice little Zbrush workshop with Hasbro for modeling. Hope that goes well! Got together everything for Lucas Arts too, but their website is wonky to say the least.

Everything else is top secret I'm afraid. Can't go sharing all my ideas :)

Back into the swing of things

Well the start of this semester has been a rough one and hasn't allowed for much update action.Though I do plan on starting to upload a little more often....

I've been starting to do more portfolio things. Hasbro has their Zbrush workshop again this year and I hope to get into it. Its a good push to also get my other portfolio stuff ready for other summer internships.

Life is good :)
